Belarusian delegation has submitted for consideration in the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly a draft resolution on the situation in the sphere of democracy and human rights in the USA. Belarus called upon UN member-states to denounce the USA for systematic breach of basic human rights and freedoms, including the restrictions of the freedom of press and tight control over mass media. In particular, the Belarusian project contains allegations of unfounded and secret detention cases, wide-spread intolerance, xenophobia and discrimination.
The authors of the draft outline that US electoral system does not correspond to international standards and results in the inability of many citizens to cast their votes. Belarus proposes to condemn the USA for the exercise of death penalty in relation to the minors and mentally handicapped. Besides, a demand is stated to terminate the activity of all the secret jails and to institute criminal proceedings against those guilty of their existence.
The USA, EU member-states and Canada, in their turn, proposed the delegates of the Third General Assembly Committee to condemn the violation of human rights in Belarus. Their draft resolution reads that the persecution of opposition representatives, human rights activists, journalists and NGO activists is mounting up in the country.
