October, 24th, UN Birthday | Alaksandra Rahažynskaja

On October, 24th the whole world celebrates the Day of UNO. It is exactly on the day 61 years ago the UN Charter came into force. On this occasion UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan stated the organisation’s success in promoting development, security and human rights as well as some failures, namely in the sphere of nuclear non-proliferation, fighting terror and bridging the gap between the rich and the poor.

UNO was grounded in 1945. Its Charter was signed on June, 16 1945 in San Francisco at the final sitting of the Conference of United Nations. It came into force on October, 24th of the same year.

Secretary-General noted that there is no consensus now among the member-states on what should be regarded as the primary threats to the world community. Those living on small islands consider global warming to be such. The dwellers of the cities falling under terrorist attacks, such as New York and Istanbul, believe that fighting terror is the uppermost priority. Others mention poverty, illnesses and genocide.

In his opinion, the truth is that all these problems present global jeopardy and all of them should raise concerns all over the world. Secretary-General underscored that exactly nowadays the world cannot afford being disunited.

On this occasion Kofi Annan called upon the countries of the world to make UN even stronger and more effective.
