Elections at the Time of Conflict | Alaksandar Martynaŭ

Counting of votes in local elections in Georgia is complete. Under different circumstances the event would not have attracted much public attention but one more exceptionally intense deterioration in Russian-Georgian relations has turned into a test of trust for the political course of president Saakashvili.

According to the data of Central Election Committee of Georgia, the party of the current president “National Movement” won a persuasive victory. In Tbilisi, which is evidently the core electoral region, “Movement” garnered 66,42% of votes. The Conservative bloc “Davitashvili, Hidaisheli, Berdzanishvili” received 12%, Labour Party came up third with 10,67% of votes.

The outcome of the elections is in agreement with the results of exit pools assigning uncontested victory to the party of power. Despite the fact the head of CEC of Georgia Guram Halagishvili prompted the existence of electoral violations in six electoral districts and did not exclude the possibility of re-election in one of these – Abasha.

The representatives of Labour Party called upon the international community not to recognize the official data of CEC, though the representatives of OSCE and EU missions monitoring the elections have already stated the absence of any grave violations.
