The National Bank of the Republic of Belarus established a minimal amount of Statute Fund to be accumulated by every Belarusian bank. The Fund will amount to 5 million euros in Belarusian currency.
The corresponding regulation of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus № 127 comes into force on October, 27 2006. The act was elaborated in order to promote the implementation of part 2 article 75 of the new edition of the Bank Code of the Republic of Belarus.
The exigency for the Statute Fund to be no less than the equivalent of 5 million euros was introduced in 2002. The core novelty of the regulation lies in the fact that from now on the requrement will be valid for all the banks, inclusive of those operating in free economic zones (FEZ). There are currently 30 banks registered in the republic, 6 of them are FEZ "Minsk" residents.
According to BelTA, similar measures have already been adopted in several neighbouring countries. Rationale behind these provisions is to promote banks' durability with respect to financial hazards through boosting the amount of their own capital (an integral part of which is in particular Statute Fund).
