EU Declaration Commemorating 9/11 Terrorist Acts | Alaksandra Rahažynskaja

With the aim of commemorating the fifth anniversary of 9/11 terrorist attacks, the European Union has commemorated the numerous victims, expressed its condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased and once again denounced any form of terrorism.

“Horrible terrorist attacks of September, 11 have vividly illustrated that terrorism poses a threat to all the countries and nations of the world. Terrorism threatens the security and the values of democratic societies, to the rights and freedoms of a citizen especially with regard to the fact that is directed against the innocent. Terrorism cannot be justified by any reasons”. These are the opening words of the document.

According to the Declaration, fighting terror is a priority of the European Union. EU highly values the cooperation with the United States and other countries in this sphere and underscores that all the action taken in order to prevent terrorist attacks and fight terrorism in general should correspond to the norms of international law, especially international humanitarian right, the right of the refugees and the right of human rights. In this connection, the European Union approved of the adoption of the General Assembly on September 8th 2006 of the first Global Strategy on Fighting Terror and mentioned that it will continue meeting its obligations on the participation in moulding a more secure world.

EU member-states emphasize that full-value cooperation of the international community brought about significant progress in fighting terror and a large number of terrorist acts was prevented but standing success in the struggle with terror may only be achieved if the international community resolves the problems, propitious to the expansion of terrorism.
