On June, 24 2006 the president of Philippines Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed a law, completely banning capital punishment in the country.
The Philippine Constitution of 1987 prohibited capital punishment, which was nevertheless reintroduced in 1993. Despite the fact a moratorium was established in 2000. That is why the adoption of the law proves to be a final step in a long road of Philippines towards imposing an ultimate ban on state-sanctioned killing.
Earlier this month corresponding law drafts were adopted by the majority of both chambers of the parliament. 117 deputies of the lower chamber voted for the ban while in the Senate the decision was passed almost unanimously.
