Ban on Capital Punishment in Moldova | Hanna Žarabcova

On June, 29 2006 the Parliament of Moldova introduced alterations to the Constitution, banning capital punishment.

Moldova is bound by the obligation to completely ban capital punishment by 2007, which is provided for by the country’s cooperation with the EU.

Besides, a complete ban on capital punishment creates necessary conditions for initiating internal procedures of Moldova’s ratifying 13 Protocol of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. In addition, by passing the amendments to the Constitution Moldova is enabled to join the second facultative Protocol to the International Pact of Civil and Political Rights, directed at establishing a ban on capital punishment.
