On May, 30 2006 at a sitting of an administrative-economic body the president of Ukraine Viktor Juščenko announced granting by the State absolute support to all the languages in its territory.

A number of south-west city and region councils have lately adopted resolutions granting to the Russian the status of a regional language. The president of Ukraine declared the decisions to be illegal for the issue of any language status is to be resolved in a legislative body and is outside the competence of local governance bodies. A special presidential initiative or that of no less than two thirds of Supreme Rada is required to change the status of a certain language.

In terms of illegality of the abovementioned local governance bodies’ decisions president Viktor Juščenko charged public prosecution with adopting measures aimed at annulling them.
