Slovakia is the first country to ratify the International Convention on Fighting Nuclear Terror, which was adopted by UN General Assembly on March, 13 2005.
On March, 23 2006 the representatives of Slovakia handed the instrument of ratification to the UN Secretary-General. Up to the current moment Convention has been signed by the representatives of 100 countries. In order to come into force, the document is to be ratified by 22 countries.
The document is aimed at enhancing international cooperation in the sphere of fighting terrorism and the proliferation of mass destruction weapons. Its signing turns to be a significant step forwards primarily in legal cooperation aimed at fighting terrorist threat.
The Convention exacts extradition and prosecution of those related to such crimes. The document lays down that the acts of nuclear terrorism may be of gravest consequences and turn to be a threat to peace and security. The Convention provides a basis for securing nuclear objects, both peaceful and military, from terrorist attacks, as well as lays the foundation of the mechanism of stolen radioactive materials, substances and nuclear appliances return.
